Can anyone please help me understand why I am getting different month values for 

SimpleDateFormat dateFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("dd/MM/yyyy");    
System.out.println(dateFormat.format(cal.getTime()) 
                   + "--" 
                   + cal.get(Calendar.MONTH));
